The profitability of renewable energy and resources

An immediate and comprehensive transition to solar energy must take priority over all other economic considerations. Any further delay will cost society more than it would to make the transition. The quicker and more comprehensively fossil energy and resources can be supplanted by their solar counterparts, the greater the cost saving to society and the less the strain on government budgets threatened by ever higher clean-up costs in the wake of fossil-fuel-induced catastrophe, be it storm or flood damage or regional wars over energy, the growing cost of waste disposal or the cost of maintaining an ever more bloated environmental protection bureaucracy. Almost all environmental damage can be traced to the use of fossil and nuclear energy and fossil raw materials. The greater the investment in solar resources today, the lower the costs imposed on tomorrow.

Focus of Accelerated RDD

The production of electricity and heat from biomass resources is currently commercial. Little additional research is needed in the existing technology. Any achievements in advanced fossil fuel generation technologies should be studied to evaluate their potential adaptation for biomass fuels. Improvements in the performance (particularly the lifetimes) of emission clean-up catalysts would reduce the cost of efficient wood-burning equipment and improve its market acceptance. In addition, the development of a biomass gasifier and gas clean-up system might make combined cycle technology feasible using wood or other biomass and reduce costs by virtue of greatly improved efficiency. Research on MSW feedstock preparation, particularly improvements in separating and recovering recyclable materials, and removing materials that produce toxic or other unwanted emissions in the combustion process, is also needed.

Methanol from Biomass

Several technical and economic assessments have been prepared by the private sector for methanol production from selected biomass feedstocks. Since there are no biomass-to-fuel-methanol plants operating in the world, these analyses are based on conceptual processes. Considerable variation is noted in process flowsheets, plant sizes, feedstock costs, methods of financing, etc hence, a wide variability in the ultimate product economics is observed. Estimates of costs of methanol from biomass, using today's technology, range from 0.60 to 1.70 gallon, depending on assumptions. For comparative purposes, methanol from natural gas is in the 0.45 to 0.60 gallon cost range, depending on the assumption made regarding natural gas prices. Estimates of the cost of methanol from coal range from 0.65 to more than 1.00 gallon. Newer technologies, which have been under development for the past decade, intended to improve the efficiency and or environmental impacts of coal and natural gas utilization, also have potential applicability to thermal, electric power, and gasification utilization of biomass. There is a need to assess the applicability to biomass uses of such systems as ISTIG using aeroderivative turbines (particularly the hot gas clean-up systems for gasifiers), coal liquefaction and gasification, and atmospheric and pressurized fluid-bed combustion. The greater reactivity of biomass versus coal feedstocks may provide biomass with an advantage in some of the gasification technologies.

Some Additional Foundations Non Sequiturs

As can be seen from these few examples, a great deal of work needs to be done to clean up the definitions promulgated in physics and electrodynamics for more than a century. It is inexplicable46 that this has not long since been accomplished. These errors permeate almost every textbook, and they desperately need correcting. The National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation should fund the best possible effort on this rework of the foundations of physics.

Money myth Renewable energy is more expensive than thermal power

The most bizarre illustration of externalized costs I ever encountered was a 1998 incident concerning pigeons and the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility in the UK, a plant infamous for its radioactive emissions. It appears radio-toxic emissions were gradually 'charging up' the pigeons that frequented the site to the point that they could be classified as low-level radioactive waste. What is more, these pigeons were flying around the local town dropping their own waste, also classified as low-level radioactive. And so a crack squad of radioactive pigeon catchers was set into motion and a radioactive bird poo van dispatched for washing down window sills and car bonnets. In this case, if the council paid for the clean-up van, the costs were externalized and, if the company paid, they were internalized.

Energy Efficient Generation

There has been some interest in trying to clean up emissions from coal combustion, given that around the world coal reserves are more extensive than those for gas. There are two main technologies. Fluidized bed coal combustion plants are more efficient in burning coal than conventional coal plants and can reduce acid emissions. With integrated gasification combined cycle technology (IGCC), coal is converted into gas which is then burnt in a CCGT. However, these as yet only partially developed technologies are likely to be expensive, with capital costs kW for fluidized bed plants perhaps twice that for CCGT, and even more in the case of IGCC. Moreover, the overall energy conversion efficiencies of these plants seem likely to be lower than for gas-fired CCGT plants, possibly only around 40 compared with 55 and higher for CCGTs. So they will produce more carbon dioxide per kWh generated.

Generation of Electric Power Using Blomass

Electric utilities currently make limited use of biomass as a fuel for power generation (although the utilities often buy power from cogenerators who use biomass as fuel). All current power generation from biomass, whether generated by industry or utilities, is via steam turbines. Research is continuing to develop gas clean-up technologies that would permit use of biomass as a fuel for gas turbines, either directly or after gasification, particularly in the cogeneration mode. Wood and wood wastes and byproducts are the principal fuels currently used.

It will stop the pollution-caused destruction of species, and dramatically reduce the hydrocarbon combustion contributions to global warming. There will no longer be a necessity to consider burying in the bottom of the sea the excess CO2 from massive hydrocarbon combustion to provide the much-needed electrical power, because it will no longer be necessary to burn the oil, coal, and gas to get the power. And there will no longer be any necessity for expensive and highly vulnerable nuclear power plants with their resulting nuclear wastes that will remain radioactive for thousands of years.

The fuel cell system

The fuel, methanol in the case of figure 1, enters the fuel processor where it is converted into hydrogen. The produced hydrogen reformate is cleaned from by-products that are hazardous for fuel cell catalysts, like carbon monoxide, in a clean-up system. The cleaned and moisturized hydrogen-rich reformate is run to the fuel cell's anode chambers where the hydrogen is oxidized while oxygen is reduced at the cathode. On December 27, 1991 at 10 20 in the morning, one of our lead-acid cells exploded. The battery had been recharging all night, pushed into gassing by our wind turbine and 50 mph winds. The sun rose bright that morning and the PVs added even more power to the battery. I was outside the house, about thirty yards away, pumping water for the horses. I heard what sounded like a rifle shot inside the house. I ran up and discovered that one of the lead-acid cells had exploded. The side and upper edge of the cell was blown into small bits and three quarts of fully charged sulfuric acid electrolyte were draining on the wood floor. Acid had been sprayed over the wall, over an inverter, and over two more battery packs composed of nicad cells. It was a monster mess and it caught me totally unprepared. For instance, any finite cost of cleaning-up some environmental side-effect of a technology (e.g. nuclear waste) can be accommodated as a negligible increase in the capital cost of the technology, if the cleaning-up can be postponed sufficiently far into the future. What makes fuel cells most attractive for transport applications is the fact that they emit zero or ultra-low emissions. And this is what mainly inspired automotive companies and other fuel cell developers in the 1980s and 1990s to start developing fuel-cell-powered cars and buses. You've probably heard of the Green Party, an environmentally aggressive political group here in Germany. The party is very vocal and still growing. With the incredible opening of the East in the past 10 months and with German reunification virtually assured, I see environmental concerns and action moving center stage in Europe and staying there for a very long time to come. On the other side of the Iron Curtain are lands and waters so destroyed with pollution and other abuses they make Professor Tolkien's Mordor look like a national park. Cleaning up the Warsaw Pact countries from now on represents a much bigger challenge than salvaging their foundering economies. We've just been handed an unprecedented opportunity to start over and maybe get it right this time.


For emerging markets, this concern with the environment, and climate change, comes at just the wrong time. Just when technology and capital has started to flow like never before - enabling them to develop their economies and lift their populations out of poverty - the world has suddenly become concerned with their energy consumption and consequent emissions. This simply does not fit with the dominant development paradigm, which has been 'grow first, clean up later'.11
