Conclusion

Why do scientists have so much difficulty with cross- discliplinary insights? Perhaps it is due to their narrow education which did not bridge the disciplines while teaching the basic physical principles as "Unified Technical Concepts" (UTC) does for physics [25]. In this Freshman college course, the similarities between electrical, mechanical, fluidic, and thermal systems are emphasized. It could be called a "Systems Theory" approach to physics. There are "force-like" concepts and "distance-like" concepts in all four systems mentioned above. The beauty of this teaching method, from my experience, is that it helps the student to remember formulae which are based upon more fundamental, analogous principles. As more unified physics is taught, future scientists will evolve who produce new methodologies that will broaden the scope of energy research and development, as a direct result of their comprehensive, unified conceptual insight.

With the enormous demands of the Space Shuttle payloads, an available replacement propulsion method is easily 10 to 20 years in the future. Dr. Gerard O'Neill's solution (author of Space Colonies) is to use the resources of the moon and asteroids to avoid trips to and from the earth. However, the voltage, current and power density limitations that presently are insurmountable for low earth orbit have to be considered before sizable interplanetary spacecraft are produced.
