1 As Mrs Thatcher said in the speech: 'The protection of the environment and the balance of nature are one of the greatest challenges of the late 20th century.' She went on to proclaim: 'For generations we have assumed that the efforts of mankind would leave the fundamental equilibrium of the world's systems and atmosphere stable. But we have unwittingly begun a massive experiment with the system of this planet itself.' And in perhaps the most famous quote from the speech: 'We do not have a freehold on the Earth, only a full repairing lease.'
2 DNC: Declared net capacity is the nameplate capacity of a project multiplied by a capacity factor, set for each resource type. DNC can be regarded as a measure of the firm capacity of intermittent sources, compared to nuclear availability. The capacity factors used are 0.43 for wind, 0.17 for solar, 0.33 for tidal/wave, 0.55 for small hydro and 1 for all others.
