Based on the projections of demand made in the 16 th Electric Power Supply survey, additional generation capacity of over 100,000MW needs to be added to ensure power on demand by 2012. This amounts to nearly doubling the existing capacity of about 100,000MW and it is estimated that for building the additional power capacity, associated transmission and distribution infrastructure, nearly 8000 billion rupees (US$175 billion) would have to be invested.
This is of course important for renewables, as meeting the additional requirement for energy and power entails taking advantage of all economically viable sources of energy and working out a suitable strategy of energy mix to gain the optimum advantage. Indigenous renewable sources clearly have a role.
