The Kyoto Protocol

Another way in which German energy policy differs from U.S. energy policy is that Germany has fully supported the Kyoto Protocol, which it ratified on May 31, 2002. According to an EU arrangement, Germany and other EU countries share the burden of meeting the protocol's carbon dioxide emission reduction requirements. Because Germany's level of carbon dioxide is significantly higher than that of some other EU countries, Germany is required by the EU to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 21 percent relative to the 1990 baseline. Germany demonstrated compliance with this requirement, cutting a significant amount of its carbon dioxide emissions by 2006, mainly through an increase in the usage of renewable energy. In addition, Germany has recently instituted environmental regulations that have curtailed exploration for natural gas.
