Integrated gearboxes

As noted in Section 6.11.1, the cases of integrated gearboxes must be very robust, in order to transmit the rotor loads to the nacelle structure without experiencing deflections which would impair the proper functioning of the gears. In view of the complex shape of the casing, stress distributions due to each load vector usually have to be determined using finite-element (FE) analysis - these can then be superposed in line with the different extreme load combinations. The fatigue analysis will require the superposition of stress histories resulting from simultaneous time histories of rotor thrust, yaw moment and tilt moment derived from simulations at different wind speeds.

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable energy is energy that is generated from sunlight, rain, tides, geothermal heat and wind. These sources are naturally and constantly replenished, which is why they are deemed as renewable. The usage of renewable energy sources is very important when considering the sustainability of the existing energy usage of the world. While there is currently an abundance of non-renewable energy sources, such as nuclear fuels, these energy sources are depleting. In addition to being a non-renewable supply, the non-renewable energy sources release emissions into the air, which has an adverse effect on the environment.
